Transit Goes to New Heights with Aerial Trams and Gondolas

Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York City

Here’s a project we’re proud to be connected with.

A cousin to the gondola, this aerial tramway in New York City connects the Upper East Side of Manhattan with Roosevelt Island. The Roosevelt Island Tram carries 100 people (tourists, commuters, students) and takes about five minutes to cross the East River.

And the role of SCJ Alliance? We performed the early alternatives analysis to determine what to do with the original system built in the mid-1970’s. Through SCJ’s Engineering Specialties Group division, we completed cost estimates and feasibility studies.  Then we were involved in the design, procurement and implementation of the new system, culminating in its 2010 opening.

SCJ/ESG also reviewed the system’s operations and maintenance staffing to ensure safety regulations were being met, and well as to develop a cost proforma for future operations.

We love working on aerial transit projects.
